Program Description

BURN@N3AS Logo

Students in the Berkeley Undergraduate Researchers Network at N3AS (BURN@N3AS) program are supported directly by N3AS and their mentors across the US, with one on one meetings, projects, workshops, planned semester by semester.

In addition to a scientific mentor, the students have a non-science mentor and participate in bi-weekly lectures or activities with N3AS members, specifically designed to support students through small groups and individualized research development plans.

Requirements

  • Strong interests in nuclear physics, neutrino physics, dark matter, and/or related topics in astrophysics
  • Having completed Quantum Mechanics coursework (Physics/Astrophysics major)
  • Computational skills (e.g. Python, Sequel, Matlab, C, and similar, related to Physics and Astrophysics)
  • Strong background in algebra and calculus
  • N3AS is well-suited for transfer students seeking funded research and mentoring opportunities
  • Students eligible for work study are invited to apply
  • Independent study units can be provided
  • Students are paid biweekly; international students can participate in mentorship and research, but there may be limits to their ability to receive compensation.

Position can be renewed semester by semester, ideal commitment 2 or more semesters

Responsibilities

  • Carry out research-related to the N3AS project for approximately 10 hours a week
  • Meet regularly with their science project mentor
  • Meet once a month with the career mentor
  • Participate regularly in the N3AS workshops, 6 meetings per semester approximately
  • Contribute to the N3AS community
