Modeling laser-plasma amplifiers

Laser intensity is limited by material damage to conventional optical elements (e.g., mirrors, lenses, etc). One idea for reaching orders-of-magnitude higher laser intensity is  to use a plasma-based amplifier. In plasma amplifiers the amplification is based on a nonlinear three-wave coupling between two electromagnetic waves and. a mode of the plasma. Students will run simulations of the plasma amplifiers and learn how to apply this analysis to either proposed or ongoing experiments.
