Supernova Cosmology

Prof. Saul Perlmutter

Our research group is working on multiple projects that are measuring the properties of our expanding universe with the goal of understanding the underlying physical laws. Most of the projects design instruments and collect data on supernova explosions in distant galaxies and on gravitational lensing of these galaxies, using ground-based and space-based telescopes, and then develop statistical and machine-learning analyses to obtain the distances to these astronomical “mile markers.”

Undergraduates in our group work closely with our team on these analyses, and sometimes participate in the designing of upcoming projects or the remote data collection at the telescopes.
